Besides increasingly maturing of wind farm, PV station, thermal power plant and other supporting ES applications, ES technology has becoming the most important market on a variety of power shortages, large-scale industry. According to incomplete statistics of BJX, there are 20 more ES applicated scenarios with actual program up to now, and if these scenarios are gradually promotion and application in the future, the ES market will usher new growth field. The following scenarios are ESS projects showing below:
Various ES application scenarios
1.Data Center
ShanXi LvLiang Smart Energy Project takes “Tianhe No. 2” LvLiang cloud computing center as the main load object, to build a cloud computing center with energy internet powered by 100% renewable energy, exploring the integration mode about energy internet, cloud computing center, big data and other strategic emerging industries, then demonstration and promotion. This project plans to build a 5MW/20MWh ESS, a 5MWp PV and windfarm, ten 60kW DC charging piles and 10 AC charging piles.
2.Cold Chain Logistics Park
China Southern Power Grid Guangxi Nanning Power Supply Bureau and ZhuangNing Cold Storage Co. Ltd. signed a cooperation agreement on the “construction of distributed energy storage demonstration project based on intelligent power management” (The Agreement). The first step of The Agreement is to complete the research about core technology of user-side ESS, and will reduce 900,000 Yuan of comprehensive electricity cost for users by this ESS construction with 250 kW/500kWh LFP battery, which will effectively reduce the electricity cost of Guangxi "vegetable basket" livelihood projects, improve the intelligent power consumption level of agricultural cold chain logistics enterprises, safe power consumption level, and boost the high-quality development of modern agriculture in Guangxi with scientific and technological innovation. Meanwhile, the following construction of this project will include ice-cold storage air-conditioning ES, PV, bidirectional charging station for electrical vehicle, virtual power plant application and so on., to create a new demonstration case of the Southern Power Grid comprehensive energy zone.
3.Electrical Grid Platform Area
On Sept. 15, the State Grid HuNan Electricity Co. Ltd. independently developed an apparatus about integrated of storage and charging with 100kW/270kWh, and had been successfully trial operation and connected to the grid in No.2721 platform area, which indicated that the first ES and charging solution for the series of problems in the high load station area is officially put into use in China. The platform area integrated storage and charging device was used for such problems like insufficient construction of power supply facilities in old residential areas, difficulty in expanding transformer capacity, lack of DC charging stations in the community, and so on. Based on the utilization of new energy batteries the research and development integrates dynamic expansion, peak, power quality management and charging solutions in the station area, which provides a new solution for reducing the cost of distribution network transformation and improving quality and efficiency.
4.Electrical Line on Roadside
On Sept. 11, HongQiao Town Line on roadside of State-Grid YueQing City Power Supply about ESS project was officially running, and its properties with 1MW/2.088MWh could generate 1,000 kWh in full power operation, also it was the first electrical line on roadside ESS in ZheJiang Province. This ESS station was Gird-connected 10kV line on roadside, and precisely matches with the power supply line. During the summer peak season, the model of triple charge-discharge could participate in “peak-shaving and valley filling”, which could effectively avoid peak electricity consumption and satisfy the normal operation requirement of the grid. As a practical application of ESS on roadside in the distributed network, this project was not only solve the problems that large requirements of channel source, cable equipment as well as superior substation resources when invested traditional power grids, but also promoted the power grid from “power follow the load” to “interaction with power and load”. Its official operation can effectively alleviate the problems of difficult power grid upgrading, poor power quality and low power supply reliability in XiXi Industrial Zone of HongQiao Town of YueQing City.
5.Multi-station Fusion
An electric vehicle power exchange station was built on ShiXin Road at first, and HeFei Power Supply Company fully use of the current grid resources to build the first multi-station fusion that integrating PV station, ESS, 5G station, EV charging station, data center as well as exchange station in the province and didn’t modify the original overall layout. The roof PV station, ESS, EV station and others of this project were forming a “micro-grid system”, and 88 kW of its volume can generate 84,000 kWh yearly, to supply the device in station, like data center, 5G station and so on. Additionally, 1.34 GW of ESS guarantees the balance and stability of power supply, while it playing a certain role of “peak-shaving and valley-filling” by using night charging and daytime supply. 
6.Electric Ship Shore Power
On June, Three Gorges Power reached a cooperation with Three Gorges Navigation Bureau to determine the installation of PV modules on the Three Gorges Marine barge 607, supporting shore-based ES devices and electric boat charging interfaces to ensure clean energy consumption and electric boat charging for the barge. On Oct. 12, the advanced ESS technology was introduced by Three Gorges Power using in the program that integrated with PV, ESS and Charging, and this project was undertaken by Yangtze River Power Three Gorges in Three Gorges dam area successfully passing inspection and start officially operation now. 
7.Oil Depot
On Nov. 4, chaired by the South China Branch Company of the State Pipeline Network, and led by Huazhong University of Science and Technology, while construction by NanJing MiTe Power Tech. CO, Ltd. to build container ESS of 2 x 250kW/2 x 600kWh. This system has already passed inspection and start officially operation. 
This project is located in FuWan Oil Depaot, GaoMing District, FoShan City, GuangDong Province. It can participate in “peak-shaving and valley filling” that reduce oil transportation cost of customers using the different price at peak or valley after running of ESS. Meanwhile, ESS can dynamically adjust the reactive power of the power grid in the oil depot and can be used as a backup power supply, which will greatly improve the power quality and reliability of customers.
Closely connection of container ESS and original electric system with the functions of anti-countercurrent, peak cutting and valley filling, anti-overload, maintenance and lock, demand management, etc., to make sure the stable operation of the power system.
8.Commercial District
Jingneng Group Leduo Port Intelligent Park support lithium battery ESS project, and its scale of 2MW/7.96MWh was won the bidding of 1,861,4400 yuan by Sichuan HaoBang ZhongNeng Power Engineering co. Ltd.
Nandu Power’s Beijing Blue Jinglijia user-side commercial complex intelligent ESS is located in North Third Ring Road, Haidian District, Beijing, with a total project scale of MW/5MWh, of which the first phase of operation is 500KW/2.5MWh, and the project takes up a total area of 170 m2. The ESS is connected to the substation busbars of the shopping mall on the low voltage side of 400V, and the excepted usage life of the station is 10 years. The ESS station was built on May 22, 2017, and it was not only realizing the capacity and electricity charge management of the shopping mall, but also solved the power transmission line for expanding and impacted power when charged the EV. Meanwhile, it used the “peak-shaving and valley-filling” to participate in the power demand side response. 
9.Hospital 
To improve the safety of electricity usage and utilization efficiency as well as dealing with the problem of power shortage during the peak period of electricity consumption, Peking University International Hospital signed a 2.7MW ESS station project in the form of energy management contracts by using social capital. At the first stage, it has already built PV station of 0.58MW, which can smoothly integrate with ESS to improve controllability of power generation, enhance usage efficiency of recycle energy and other functions. During the power out of work of Municipal Administration, the ESS and PV station can become an emergence backup device, like diesel generator, UPS, EPS, etc., which greatly improve supportability of power supply. Additionally, storage of electric energy in the valley (battery), power supply to the electricity load during peak hours, the use of the "peak valley price difference" to reduce the electricity costs of power users, the first phase of the energy storage power station is expected to save 160,000 Yuan per year.
10.5G Station
ShanDong Mobile JiNing Branch uses the different price between peak and valley to install ESS for 26 base stations. With necessary and reliable electricity consumption, discharging at peak time, while charging at valley time, which off-peak power consumption reducing electricity expenses, to realize “zero-cost” on backup power. This solution solved the problem of ES in the generator room; on the other hand, it saved the electricity cost by buying electricity at night while using ES at daytime. Besides, seamless handover power supply model when municipal electricity out of power. Nowadays, the first 26 base station are expected to save electricity cost almost 200,000 yuan.
In addition, China Tower is trying to a new ESS model at base station. During some invite bids, China Tower requires the winning enterprise to spend no less than 43% of the winning bid amount to invest in the energy management business of the ES backup power contract based on “peak-shaving and valley-filling” in the China Tower communication base station, and the winning bidder is expected to receive a maximum income of about 0.7 yuan /kWh.
11.Tunnel
Fujian Province is a mountainous area with long and odd tunnel, so the electricity cost of tunnel lighting is really expensive per year. Since the construction of ESS at PengShan Ridge, it not only obtained the profit by using different price of “peak-valley”, also replaced the traditional UPS power supply system as a backup power supply for tunnel, and its functionally stability power source is more advanced than UPS, which enhanced the power supply stability. According to the statistics, almost 12,390 kWh of charging and 11,750 kWh of discharging in 30 days, made 4,560 yuan, which average daily income was 152 yuan. Estimated by this, there will be 500,000 yuan in saving electricity cost for PengShan Ridge tunnel if the ESS can run 10 years.
12.Islands
There are residents, island GM, base station of movable signal, radar station and other electrical equipment in CheNiuShan island, and normal PV as well as windfarm cannot support reliable electricity for island. State grid JiangSu Province used PMS to precisely coordinate and control power generation, ES, electricity consumption, to allocated the connecting way of users. A 50 kW of windfarm, 30 kW of PV, 100 kW diesel generator and 450 kWh ESS under PMS coordinating control and economic operation. Off-grid intelligent micro-grid island not only solves the problem of electricity and water consumption for residents, providing power supply guarantee for island and ocean development as well as protection, also it provides a technical template for construction of smart island micro-grid.
13.Rail Transit
On the morning of Sept. 26, China Railway No. 22 Group GuangZhouHuangPu Tramcar Line No. 1, the first tramcar using “super capacitor + lithium titanate battery” that technology with mixed ES and power supply in China on the completion of the works. The line system has a capacity of 9,500 farads, and automatically charges the vehicle when it reaches the gap between boarding and alighting time, taking no more than 30 seconds, which realize the dynamic balance about tram energy consumption and supply, to making sure vehicle operation is uninterrupted. Meanwhile, the lithium titanate battery in the vehicle can compensate power supply while it has emergency, greatly improving the response capability of vehicle operation. Due to “super capacitor + lithium titanate battery” was applied as power supply to ESS, there is no contact network in the selection, dramatically reducing the “spider-web” in the urban air. Additionally, above 80 % of braking energy will be recycled into super capacitor forming ES when the vehicle is braking, which realize energy recycling, efficiency and saving.
The ground-based supercapacitor/battery hybrid energy storage device independently developed by Beijing Jiaotong University was connected to the network test at Liyuan Station of Beijing Metro Batong Line. The device can not only recycle the regenerative braking energy of the train, but also use the energy storage device to pull the train to the subway station in an emergency when the power supply system fails. In a single vehicle test at night, the e9nergy saving rate of each trip can reach 20%, and at the normal operating of subway, daily energy saving can reach 1,500 kWh as well as rate of 13% on weekday, while 900 kwh with 17% energy saving on weekend. 
14.Offshore Oil Platform 
Shanghai Guoxuan Maiyang Marine Technology Co., LTD., a subsidiary of Guoxuan GaocCO, won an order for 1790kWh containerized ESS supporting the 2018 project of Smart Grid Technology and Equipment under the National Key Research and Development Plan.
The project is "Key technology for reliable operation of Offshore multi-platform interconnected power system", led by CNOOC Research Institute, is an innovative practice of using large-capacity energy storage technology to improve power grid stability of CNOOC system, filling the current application gap of large-capacity energy storage technology in CNOOC system.
The power grid of offshore oil field is a typical isolated island power grid, which has no electrical connection with the land power grid. At the same time, the power supply capacity of offshore oil field power grid is small, the load capacity is large, and the start moment of large load and the power grid fault will cause large frequency fluctuations. In order to ensure the stability of the power grid in the case of N-1 failure, a relatively small amount of energy storage can effectively improve the frequency modulation performance of the power system and maintain the frequency stability.
15.Oil Exploration
CNPC Chuanqing Drilling Engineering Co., LTD. Changqing Underground Technology Operation company has off-grid lithium battery energy storage system transformation project bidding, due to the field operation of the test oil and gas team, mainly rely on diesel generator power supply, there is no fixed, continuous power supply of economic power. This plan uses a cost-effective lithium battery energy storage system to solve the problems of discontinuous power supply and electricity bottlenecks. According to the understanding of the North Star energy storage network, the final Xi 'an Jingwu Energy Saving Technology Co., LTD., Hebei Power Cube New Energy Technology Co., LTD., Qinghai Green Grass New Energy Technology Co., Ltd. won the bid, will jointly provide 27 sets of test oil and gas units retrofitted with off-grid lithium battery energy storage system.
16.Coal Mine
On September of 2020, the National Energy Group issued a public tender for the research and implementation of coal mine energy storage power supply of Xinjiang Energy Mechanical and Electrical Management Center, the project location is located in the 110kV substation of Xinjiang Energy Company Hongshaquan Coal Mine, mainly studying the application of energy storage system, including: When the power supply needs to be stopped for normal maintenance or failure on the power grid side, the battery system converts DC in the battery system to AC through the energy storage converter to supply power to the user side. In the normal operation process, the time period for the user to draw power from the grid and the time period for the battery pack to store energy is rationally allocated by the system controller according to the peak, normal, and valley hours of electricity charging.
17.School 
In August 2020, Qinghai Province issued a tender for Qumalai County rural small off-grid energy storage photovoltaic power station project, the project owner is Qumalai County Education Bureau, funded by state-owned funds for the design of safe off-grid energy storage photovoltaic system for three boarding primary schools in Cuochi Village, Duoxiu Village and Maxiu village. In the end, Jiangxi Zhongning Construction Engineering Co., Ltd. won the bid to participate in the project design, and Shaanxi Xinyuan Electric Power Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd. won the bid to participate in the construction.
18.Military Region
In a garrison the frontier of Xinjiang, the PLA’s first civil-military integrated renewable energy LAN project, invested and built by the New Energy Company of Electric Power Group was launched in August 2018, and officially grid-connection on Dec.26, 2018. This project included new built PV, windfarm with ESS, supporting construction of transmission lines, emergency diesel generate stations, and smart micro-grid control systems, etc. After its established, over 90% of energy self- sufficiency rate will become biggest renewable energy Lan in China, which can not only better meet the comprehensive energy needs of both military and civilian lighting, heating, oxygen production, water intake and equipment, but also greatly reduce the logistical burden of oil and coal, and initially build a green, low-carbon, safe, efficient and sustainable plateau modern energy system.
19.Government Building
In November 2018, the Sunhome PV & ESS station was built in Lujiang County Government building in Anhui Province, and it became the first application of integration with PV and ESS on government building’s project. The station had installed capacity of 6 kW, using Home PV system to realize off-grid. This system could generate more than 6,000 kWh electricity per year, and deliver a steady stream of clean electricity to the building.
20.Pastoral ECO-Park
On Dec. 5, 2018, the owner, Shanghai Yuhaitang Ecological Agriculture Technology Co., LTD., officially handed over the appraisal letter.So far, Shanghai Electric Power Station Group's Chongming Samsung Garden "Internet +" smart energy demonstration project system has completed commissioning. The project is a smart energy project tailored to the unique ecological environment, development planning and residents' needs of Xin 'an Village, Sanxing Town. It is an important part of the construction of Chongming world-class ecological island. During the day, the CIGS thin film photovoltaic power generation is stored in the cascade utilization power battery. When the lights are lit at night, the electricity in the energy storage system is released, and the buildings with local characteristics such as Straw Hat Forum and Haitang Left Bank are lit in turn. Up to now, an upgrade and change of rural energy with renewable energy, energy storage and energy management system as the core application is beginning.
21.Bank
On Nov. 3, 2018, Shanghai China Merchants Bank Building 1MW/2.56MWH ESS successfully connected to the grid. This project is the first commercial application of building user-side ES project in Shanghai, and is also the first ES project built by domestic financial enterprises using their own properties. The project is funded by China General Nuclear Power New Energy holding CO., Ltd., and the building owner is Shanghai China Merchants Bank CO., Ltd., and Guangzhou Zhiguang Energy Storage Technology Co., Ltd. provides comprehensive solutions for the project. This project is located at the center of Pudong district, Shanghai City, and the project covers an area of 103 square meters and provides energy saving services for Shanghai Merchants Bank Building with the mode of “peak cutting and valley filling”.
22.Hotel
The 1MW/2MWh energy storage project of Beijing Lafayette Castle Hotel, which is participated by Kelu Electronics, is an energy storage project for peak cutting and valley filling applications, and is the first energy storage power station completed and put into operation in the international procurement project of 500MWh energy storage facilities, which only takes 45 days from confirmation of order to completion of delivery.
23.Football Club
According to foreign media reports in November 2018, the British Arnathan Football Club began to use the 2MW/2.5MWh Tesla battery ESS, which is the first football club in the UK and the first football club in the world to have an ESS. The ES facility can participate in electricity market transactions by participating in electricity demand response, helping football clubs cut peaks and fill valleys to save high electricity bills.
24.Zoo
According to foreign media reports in October 2018, the San Diego Zoo in the United States will build 1MW/4MWh battery energy storage facilities to minimize energy costs by peaking and filling the valley, that is, charging the battery when the price is low and discharging it when the price is high.
25.Mobile Police Office
On October 18, 2018, the PV off-grid ESS for the mobile police Office in the southern business District of Meilong Police Station in Minhang District of Shanghai, designed and integrated by Mion Photovoltaic, was successfully completed and officially operated. The installed PV capacity of the project is 8.1kW, using high-efficiency monoclistalline silicon 300W solar modules, equipped with C12V series valve-controlled lead-acid batteries, which can be supplied to the police office for daily office use for 2 days after the power outage. This is the first “container police room + PV off-grid ES power station system in Minhang District, Shanghai. On the one hand, it continues to provide good power supply guarantee for the police room, and more importantly, it plays a benchmarking role in creating social benefits for energy conservation and environmental protection.
